Back in New Hampshire and getting settled in my new place after a crazy summer, but more on that later. For now, here's something that brought me an inordinate amount of happiness this morning. There's a great coffee shop/cafe in my new home town that I've loved over the last year. Their breakfast sandwiches are awesome and their staff is always super friendly, even at 7:00am on the coldest morning in the dead of winter. I biked there yesterday after waking to a totally empty fridge. As I sat eating my bagel I noticed signs around the store about their company policies: green this, responsible that, all the now-popular jargon I've learned to almost ignore since it became the lexicon of the zeitgeist.
I've been thinking a lot lately about the consumer choices I make and have been feeling reinspired to make better choices with my dollars, so I started wondering whether this cafe had any substance with which to back its claims. I made a note of the website and logged on this morning to find this, a veritable checklist of social and environmental responsibility that honestly made my heart sing. It's so nice to be pleasantly surprised, to know that I'm not the only one concerned with actually living by all these lofty ideals, and to find reason to have faith that "responsible" and "business" are not contradictory terms. So thanks, The Works, for making my morning. I'll be seeing you around on many more.
